Gareth Pugh

Designer

Biography

British fashion designer Gareth Pugh has received global recognition for his approach to redefining modern luxury. Born in Sunderland in 1981 and educated at London’s Central Saint Martins, Pugh has been described by Andrew Bolton — Chief Curator of the Costume Institute at The Met — as 'the Fellini of fashion' and by the The Sunday Times as 'Britain’s most exciting designer'.

Over the past decade he has worked with some of the most popular artists of our time – including Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Rihanna – and has collaborated with some of the world’s most important cultural institutions, designing shows for the New York City Ballet, the Opéra Garnier in Paris and The Royal Ballet and Opera, Covent Garden.

In 2018, with a view to expanding and diversifying his creative practice, alongside his husband and longtime creative accomplice Carson McColl, Pugh co-founded HARD+SHINY, an award winning independent creative studio based at Somerset House Studios. Their client portfolio characterised by a rich and colourful line up of global brands, including Selfridges, Rolls Royce Motor Cars and Richard Branson’s Virgin Companies.

In 2022 Pugh and McColl founded This Bright Land, a month-long not-for-profit cultural festival at Somerset House, described by the Evening Standard as 'The summer’s most joyful festival! A radical addition to the cultural scene, unlike anything before it'.

In 2024 the couple were hand picked by Danny Boyle to head up both Production and Costume Design on his highly anticipated follow up to 28 Days Later28 Years Later — with the first film in a new trilogy slated for release next summer.
