Background

While our wonderful building is closed to the public, we are bringing you three very special performances streamed live from the Royal Opera House as part of our #OurHouseToYourHouse series.

Live from Covent Garden will celebrate ballet and opera in programmes of dance and music, curated by artistic directors of the Royal Opera House: Antonio Pappano, Music Director of The Royal Opera, Oliver Mears, Director of Opera, and Kevin O’Hare, Director of The Royal Ballet.

This is the second of a series of three live concerts, the first performances to happen at the Royal Opera House since we closed our doors on 17 March. You can watch the event – or share with a friend as a gift – for £4.99. These live events are being streamed on the ROH streaming site. Find out more.

The performance will be presented by Anita Rani.

Programme for the performance:

  • Dance of the Blessed Spirits, performed by Vadim Muntagirov. Choreographer Frederick Ashton. Composer Christophe Willibald von Gluck (from the opera Orphée et Eurydice). Vasko Vassilev, Concert Master, directing Members of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House featuring Katherine Baker (flute). The revival of this rarely seen work was facilitated by the Frederick Ashton Foundation’s series of Ashton Rediscovered masterclasses.
  • Das Lied von der Erde, performed by the Royal Opera House Orchestra. Soloists Sarah Connolly and David Butt Phillip. Composed by Gustav Mahler, to a text by Hans Bethge after original Chinese poetry. Arranged for soloists and chamber orchestra by Arnold Schoenberg and Rainer Riehn.

  2. ‘Der Einsame im Herbst’ (Autumn Solitude; after Chang-Tsi)
  3. ‘Von der Jugend’ (Of Youth; after Li-Tai-Po)
